The merits and demerits of advancement in technology

◆結論（Conclusion）：我々は、メリットがデメリットを上回った場合に、科学技術を利用している。

It is quite obvious that the advancement in technology has made our daily lives comfortable and convenient. However, that often brings about bad effects on human beings and the environment. I would like to point out three examples of the merits and demerits of new technology.

Firstly, thanks to personal computers and portable telephones, we can communicate with people at any time, any place. But electromagnetic waves emitted by them may cause damage to our bodies because they may be related to the cause of cancer.

Secondly, thanks to a car, we can easily move and lead an independent life. But when we use more cars, that will cause more air pollution and more traffic accidents. About 3500 people are killed by traffic accidents every year in Japan.

Thirdly, thanks to prenatal tests or testing of embryos, we can prevent babies with serious hereditary diseases from being born. But that raises serious ethical questions because this technology will take away the right of handicapped people to live and cause discrimination against them.

Consequently, we take advantage of various technologies when merits overpower demerits. But I don’t know whether the advancement in technology brings about real happiness for human beings.
