Genetic engineering may have demerits as well as merits for the society. I would like to write about genetically modified crops.
This technology will increase the productivity of crops and solve the problem of food shortage in the world because genetically modified crops cannot be influenced by bad weather condition. Also, this technology will reduce the use of agricultural chemicals which have harmful effects on human health, because genetically modified crops can be resistant to insects and disease.
However, the ethical aspects of such applications or bioethics must be taken into consideration. Many consumers are worried about how genetic engineering is applied in food production. Also, environmental harmful effects of genetically modified crops have already been reported. For example, butterflies are reported to have died from the effects of contact with genetically modified crops.
Consequently, genetic engineering has benefits and dangers. Consumers are the only ones who can decide to buy products which include genetic engineering. So, producers must label some products that include genetically modified ingredients. As we make use of nuclear energy, we will use genetic engineering because its merits will overpower demerits. Also, this technology may be a new potential business.
It is up to us or consumers whether we make use of this technology or not.
